Throughout this whole term myself alongside the rest of my level 1 science class have been focused primarily on the four spheres and the effect that human-induced activities have on them. We have also been learning about global warming, fossil fuels, acid rain, eutrophication, and ocean acidification. Written below is the human-induced activity that I will be writing about, which is how deforestation impacts the four spheres.
Hydrosphere
Deforestation affects the hydrosphere and also bodies of water because trees and forests play a crucial role when regulating the water cycle by absorbing rain water, preventing soil erosion, and releasing water vapor into the atmosphere. Deforestation disrupts these processes leading to an increase of runoff, floods and reduced water availability and also the quality of the water as well.
Geosphere
Deforestation affects the geosphere because it causes the exposure of soil to erosion, leading to soil degradation, loss of nutrients, and reduced agriculture productivity.
Atmosphere
Deforestation affects the atmosphere because trees absorb Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When deforestation occurs it disrupts this absorption, releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere, also contributing to climate change and global warming.
Biosphere
Deforestation affects the biosphere because it contributes to loss of habitat and fragmentation. When there is a loss of habitat it leads to the endangerment or elimination of plant and animal species.
This is a bit of what I have been learning about in term 1 of school.
